In September 2019, the research project 5G Connected Sport started under the funding of the Bavarian State Ministry of Economic Affairs, Regional Development and Energy, which has now been successfully completed. The Institute for Electronics Engineering (LTE) represented FAU in the consortium alongside partners Adidas, Megatec and UKR during the project.

The 5G Connected Sport project has the vision to develop a smart sportswear that autonomously connects to the cloud without a smartphone using LPWAN (NB-IoT & LTE-M). The goal is to enable emergency, sports performance, tracking and injury prevention solutions without the aid of additional devices

At the LTE, the project explored NB-IoT & LTE-M cellular standards in terms of energy efficiency. Step by step, energy-saving features were implemented in prototypes to make the energy consumption of a smart jacket and a smart shoe more efficient.
